Design process

From the initial meeting through to the completed project

Initial meeting

We start with an initial meeting to discuss the design brief and either look at your plans online or meet on site. I may outline some ideas as to what can be done with your space.

I then draw up a design fee proposal and contract which lists your design requirements, the process and stages of the project, how long it will take and the project fee.

Once the design fee proposal is accepted, a start date is confirmed and the design work begins.

Design direction

I talk to you about what you love, what you don’t like, what excites you and how you live and work. I then curate mood imagery for the design direction, this is not a collection of design images or sample finishes. Instead, a mood board shows a collection of images that depict feel, form and finish to evoke a mood direction, it’s a valuable tool in the design journey.

Concept design

Once a clear direction is set, the design process begins. At this stage I provide a concept design and include layout, spatial planning, a 3D sketch visual, detail guidelines, shape and form to designed furniture elements and the direction of colour, tone and texture. The design is depicted as a delivered concept including a colour presentation, drawings and finishes selections.

Design development

The next stage is design development which addresses any feedback and changes from the concept design. The design is developed and detailed further to lead to a more rounded set of drawings, visuals and selections.

Documentation for costing

Once the design is approved, I provide documentation for costing. This includes all the information your builder, cabinetmaker or project manager needs to cost the project. Part of this phase involves me liaising with your builder or cabinetmaker to establish the best method for building the design to assist with ensuring it’s costed correctly.

Documentation for construction

Finally I present you with documentation for construction. These are the documents your builder, maker or project manager needs for the construction phase. Included with this package is the time required for meetings with the builder or whoever may be procuring the project to ensure the project is implemented as per the design intention.
